Art & Music in the ‘Portrait Painting Gallery’

From the 17th of July 2022 every Sunday morning in July and August an art & music event will be staged as part of the new BARGA Art & Music Festival, hosted by the Portrait Painting Gallery in Barga, Tuscany.

The 'Portrait Painting Gallery’ located in the heart of ‘Barga Vecchia’ specialises in portraits and figurative art from the 17th century onwards. In addition, a number of activities will be organized in the gallery, such as lectures, music performances and other activities, with the aim of creating a multi-cultural meeting point for like-minded people! The Barga Art & Music Festival is an initiative of The Portrait Painting Gallery in Barga (LU), Italy.

Intimate ambiance

During this summer, starting 17 July, every Sunday morning (11.30-12.30) in July and August, the Portrait Painting Gallery will host the ‘Barga Art & Music Festival’. In this air-conditioned Art Gallery, you will be entertained by professional musicians, like Francesca Gaddi, Alessandro De Felici, Bruno Caproni, Marika van der Meer, Julian Evans, Brigitte Straeb and Anna-Livia Walker to name a few, performing Classical Music. During this festival, you can also choose to join an art lecture with topics like Amedeo Modigliani, Antonio Vivaldi and about the 18th Century ‘Grand Tour’.

From Baroque to Tango

The first concert of the BARGA Art & Music Festival will take place 17th July at 11.30 until 12.30. Performed by ‘Italian Cello Duo’; Francesca Gaddi and Alessandro De Felice. Italian Cello Duo will take you on a journey through the history of music. Hence their repertoire holds many different composers, starting from the Baroque era; like Bach, Vivaldi and Geminiani, to contemporary, like Gardel and Piazzolla.

Located on the foothills of the Apennines and the Apuan Alps in the beautiful nature reserve of the Garfagnana, lies the medieval town of Barga. It is well-known for its Scottish relations. In the 19th and early 20th Century, a lot of people from Barga emigrated to Scotland and due to family ties Barga is called ‘The most Scottish town of Italy. Barga has a lot to offer, such as the cathedral and breathtaking views, great restaurants and in the right season squares with live music!

Also every year on the cultural agenda is the famous BARGA Jazz Festival and new in 2022 the Barga Art & Music Festival! It is therefore a popular holiday destination, although not so crowded as Florence or Lucca. It is just about an hour's drive from Pisa airport and about half an hour from the city of Lucca.

Cultural heart of Barga

The Portrait Painting Gallery overlooks the ancient market square, surrounded by Palazzi with its typical Florentine Renaissance architecture. In summer this market square, with live Italian music, restaurant and cafes, is the beating and cultural heart of Barga.
